Breaking the Shackles We’ve Placed on Ourselves – Freeing Ourselves from Limiting Beliefs

Kim San | May 2, 2012 | No comments

Do we think like the elephants? I mean do we place shackles on ourselves? I mean do we have limiting beliefs that are not serving us?

Elephants are pretty powerful creatures.

They weigh in at as much as 24,000 pounds, and stand as high as thirteen feet tall.

Their trunks are agile enough to pick up a single blade of grass, and strong enough to rip branches off of a tree.

Despite their enormous power, elephants can be chained. It doesn’t seem to make sense – what chain is strong enough to hold an elephant who struggles to break it?

The answer is a small one: a small chain fastened to a metal collar around the elephant’s foot is attached to a wooden peg nailed into the ground. This holds the elephant so strongly that it doesn’t ever struggle to break free.

There is an elephant inside each of us – an inspired being of enormous power and capability. And just like the elephants that we might see in a circus, our internal elephants are also put in chains.

How does this happen?

It starts when they’re babies…

Unshackling the Chain of an ElephantChaining an elephant isn’t as simple as just putting a chain around its leg – an adult elephant would snap that chain without even noticing the effort.

The way to chain an elephant is to start when it’s a baby. You don’t even need a chain – a strong rope will do.

The baby elephant will struggle, but eventually it will realize that it can’t break the rope, and even worse, continuing to struggle creates a painful burn on its leg. The baby elephant learns not to struggle – it accepts that the limit imposed by the rope or chain is permanent, and there is no use struggling against it.

Sure, the elephant grows up, and becomes the most powerful land mammal on the face of the earth. But the chains in its mind remain, and so the chains on its leg are never broken.

The chains that bind each of us…

But wait a minute, we aren’t elephants.

We may not be able to rip branches off of trees with our noses, but human beings have learned to offset that particular deficiency with dozens of other neat tricks – stuff like language, planning, and foresight.

Surely, we know better than to fall into the same mental trap as an elephant with a chain around its leg!

Unfortunately, no, we don’t know better. We fall into that trap all the time.

You can see it whenever we speak in absolutes:

“I can’t make a living with my business.”

“I don’t know how to write a viral blog post.”

“I’m not able to quit my job.”

Whenever we take a constraint as absolute – meaning that there’s no qualifier, no “because of” or “in this situation”, we’re keeping those chains firmly in place, and never even examining the possibility that they could be easily broken.

The good news is that there is a magic word that can break those chains. I’m not exaggerating – one word is really all it takes.

Breaking the chains with a single magic word…

The magic word is “yet” – adding it on at the end of any statement that binds us will break the chain, because it recognizes that this isn’t a permanent constraint.

Here’s what this might look like:

“I can’t make a living with my business… yet.” – For me to make a living with my business, I’ll have to grow my customer base to X and my deal value to Y. What steps can I take in order to do that?

“I don’t know how to write a viral blog post… yet.” – For me to know how to write a viral blog post, I’ll have to learn more about what makes things viral to begin with, and maybe learn more about copywriting, too. What steps can I take in order to do that?

“I’m not able to quit my job… yet.” – For me to be able to quit my job, I will need to have a three month financial cushion, and secure an alternate source of income. What steps can I take in order to do that?”

Adding “yet” to the end of that sentence leads to the next step, which is thinking about what would have to change, and by extension what actions will have to taken, in order for this limitation to no longer be true.

“What steps can I take in order to do that?”

This is the most important part – by adding “yet” on to the end of these statements, you can then explore what you need to do in order to change it. But you have to actually do that exploration! It isn’t enough to just know that you could change your circumstances – you need to actually take action to do it!

Of course, you may not want to bust through every single limitation – you could legitimately decide that changing some things might be more trouble than they’re worth. The important thing is to make that choice consciously, rather than being pushed into it by old and unexamined assumptions.

Okay, over to you – have you ever busted through a constraint that you realized was only binding you because you believed it was?

17 Principles of Personal Achievement by Napolean Hill

Kim San | April 17, 2012 | No comments

I love the 17 Principles of Personal Achievement by Napoleon Hill.

17 Principles of Personal Achievement

17 Principles of Personal Achievement

Napoleon Hill (October 26, 1883 – November 8, 1970) was an American author who was one of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature. His most famous work, Think and Grow Rich, is one of the best-selling books of all time. Hill’s works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. He was also the advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933-36. He talks about these 17 principles in his book Keys to Success.

Let us look at the 17 Principles which has made his name live long after he has died.

1. Definiteness of Purpose
Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement. Without a purpose and a plan, people drift aimlessly through life.

2. Mastermind Alliance
The Mastermind principle consists of an alliance of two or more minds working in perfect harmony for the attainment of a common definite objective. Success does not come without the cooperation of others.

3. Applied Faith
Faith is a state of mind through which your aims, desires, plans and purposes may be translated into their physical or financial equivalent.

4. Going the Extra Mile
Going the extra mile is the action of rendering more and better service than that for which you are presently paid. When you go the extra mile, the Law of Compensation comes into play.

5. Pleasing Personality
Personality is the sum total of one’s mental, spiritual and physical traits and habits that distinguish one from all others. It is the factor that determines whether one is liked or disliked by others.

6. Personal Initiative
Personal initiative is the power that inspires the completion of that which one begins. It is the power that starts all action. No person is free until he learns to do his own thinking and gains the courage to act on his own.

7. Positive Mental Attitude
Positive mental attitude is the right mental attitude in all circumstances. Success attracts more success while failure attracts more failure.

8. Enthusiasm
Enthusiasm is faith in action. It is the intense emotion known as burning desire. It comes from within, although it radiates outwardly in the expression of one’s voice and countenance.

9. Self-Discipline
Self-discipline begins with the mastery of thought. If you do not control your thoughts, you cannot control your needs. Self-discipline calls for a balancing of the emotions of your heart with the reasoning faculty of your head.

10. Accurate Thinking
The power of thought is the most dangerous or the most beneficial power available to man, depending on how it is used.

11. Controlled Attention
Controlled attention leads to mastery in any type of human endeavor, because it enables one to focus the powers of his mind upon the attainment of a definite objective and to keep it so directed at will.

12. Teamwork
Teamwork is harmonious cooperation that is willing, voluntary and free. Whenever the spirit of teamwork is the dominating influence in business or industry, success is inevitable. Harmonious cooperation is a priceless asset that you can acquire in proportion to your giving.

13. Adversity & Defeat
Individual success usually is in exact proportion of the scope of the defeat the individual has experienced and mastered. Many so-called failures represent only a temporary defeat that may prove to be a blessing in disguise.

14. Creative Vision
Creative vision is developed by the free and fearless use of one’s imagination. It is not a miraculous quality with which one is gifted or is not gifted at birth.

15. Health
Sound health begins with a sound health consciousness, just as financial success begins with a prosperity consciousness.

16. Budgeting Time & Money
Time and money are precious resources, and few people striving for success ever believe they possess either one in excess.

17. Habits
Developing and establishing positive habits leads to peace of mind, health and financial security. You are where you are because of your established habits and thoughts and deeds.

p.s. On the subject of Mastermind Alliance – If you would like to form a MasterMind Group to achieve anything in your life, you can drop me a message. We will interview each other and decide if we can help support each other in our personal development journey. One of the main functions of the MasterMind group is to hold each other accountable, to ensure each of us do what we said we would do. Kick me!

16 Superfoods You SHOULD Know About! (Part 2) Spirulina

Blue green algae

Aloe

Bee Pollen

Propolis

Honey

Royal jelly

Note that I am not writing much about the super food that I will ensure that me and my family are taking every week. This is because there are so much information on the internet nowadays and writing them creates redundancy and unnecessary ‘argument’ as a lot of people want to be right. Rather I prefer to focus on eating right than being correct or right in what I write or share.

Invest in your health, focus on super foods. Focus on nutrition and pay less attention on taste. It is often the 10 inches between the tip of your tongue and your throat that demanded so much to the taste of food that you unconsciously choose the wrong food. Eat what we should, not what your tongue tells you to, not what is convenient, that is my secret, my passion to a healthier me.

Actually with the use of advanced technology a lot of the super foods are now commercially available, fast, convenient, easily obtained and can complement our busy lifestyle. To create extraordinary life, we need to stop doing ordinary things. What I feel like saying is eat right, be happy, live a successful life.

Let it go…

Kim San | January 23, 2012 | No comments

In October 2011 I volunteered four weeks of my time to serve a group of very special people from across the world who came to Malaysia because they were hungry to learn more about how to transform themselves and their inner strength.

To let it go is not to judge

To let it go is not to judge

In 4 and half days experiential training camp, these group of people learned that life has become more about what they can’t do rather than what they can do. They learned that they are far greater than they think and they have truly amazing potential. They have got the key to tap into their higher self and unleash their full capacity for success and happiness.

One of the training segments that I am passionate about is Letting it go, basically the training touches on:

To let go doesn’t mean to stop caring;
It means I can’t do it for someone else.
To let go is not to cut myself off…
It’s the realization that I can’t control another…
To let go is not to enable,
but to allow learning from natural consequences.
To let go is to admit powerlessness,
which means the outcome is not in my hands.
To let go is not to try and change or blame another,
I can only change myself.
To let go is not to care for, but to care about.
To let go is not to fix, but to be supportive.
To let go is not to judge,
but to allow another to be a human being.
To let go is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcomes,
but to allow others to affect their own outcomes.
To let go is not to be protective,
It is to permit another to face reality.
To let go is not to deny, but to accept.
To let go is not to nag, scold, or argue,
but to search out my own shortcomings and correct them.
To let go is not to adjust everything to my desires,
but to take each day as it comes and cherish the moment.
To let go is not to criticize and regulate anyone,
but to try to become what I dream I can be.
To let go is not to regret the past,
but to grow and live for the future.

To let it go it to fear less and love more.

To let go is to fear less and love more

Let it go

.

These group of people now have the courage to take action in spite of fear, doubt and worry. They are now learning to live life more in balance. Being Free Being Fulfilled. AHO!

Life is Like a Cup of Coffee

Kim San | January 23, 2012 | One comment

I love to share a story I read this morning, it reminds me of my past and awaken me to start living the present. It reminds me what it means being free, being fulfilled.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: “If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups… And then you began eyeing each other’s cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Savor the coffee, not the cups! The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Now focus on the coffee and start living a full life. :)

What I feel like saying is I love my life.

How to find out exactly what your passion is?

Kim San | July 5, 2011 | No comments

Here are some exercises that I used to find out exactly what my passion is.
Before I start, I must:

  • remove any fear
  • remove any unforgiveness
  • remove any and all expectations
  • remove all judgements.

Now I will grab a pen, paper and answer the following questions with absolute honesty!:

  • What do I daydream about?

  • What would I be doing if I could be a kid again?

  • What motivates me? Inspires me? Makes me giddy-happy?
  • What am I passionate about?

I must use this passion to speak to my friends. I have to infuse my writings with words that will go beyond the surface. I really need to speak my friends’ language. I need to understand what it is they want and need, then use that same passion to give it to them.

To do this, I’ll need to work on myself! To be totally and brutally honest with what I am doing and how I approach people.

My ideal friend needs me to be passionate about what I do. Passion

That beautiful glow I get when I do what I love will shine like a beacon in everything I do.

Fire is what people follow and passion is the one thing that will help me achieve the life, and business, of my dreams.

I keep asking myself these questions:

  • What is it that keeps me going?
  • What motivates me to do better?
  • What comes naturally to me?
  • What fulfills me?

When I have a true passion for something, money doesn’t matter and time doesn’t matter.

Nothing will matter but indulging in my passion.

We’ve heard it said: “Do what we love.”  If we truly love what we are doing, we will work passionately, willingly and fearlessly.

It’s easy to tell when people are truly passionate about their business because they’ve taken the time to provide valuable, in-depth content for their readers.  Their passion shows in everything they do.  They go out of their way to over-deliver with amazing information. Passion

Thank you for reading, thank you for your passion.

Kim San | June 28, 2011 | No comments

Lynne Twist explains that our society has become a Consumer Culture wherein greediness is rampant or people always needing more that what they only should have. Meanwhile, Deepak Chopra has shared his insights on how society may be able to reach “enlightenment”. Here are what he and his family practices to feel sufficient.

  • Get the clutter out of your life – keep only what we really need.
  • Don’t buy unless you can let go of something – only replace things whenever needed or only purchase the necessities.
  • Practice appreciation for what you already have – contentment.
  • Learn to value intangible gifts than tangible ones – never practice materialism, it has always been the value of intangible gifts that lasts a lifetime.
  • Nourish your body instead of filling it – invest in one’s well being rather than temporary things.
  • Whenever you spend money, ask yourself how it is going to affect the world – practice responsible spending.

Mr. Chopra has also mentioned that people must start to live a “sustained living” to negate consumerism which is the root of global instability. Free enterprise should focus on society’s well – being, when this becomes the only source of wealth and power in the world, then humankind has been enlightened.
